BigDamnTable 48
Squares

Character(s): Aiolos, Aiolia

„What’s this, brother? Is it this which you wanted to show me?“
Curious blue eyes followed Aiolos‘ hands as he placed a wooden board with white and black squares on the table.
„Yes. This is a chess board.“
„Chess?“
Aiolos smiled at the childish, innocent curiosity of the question.
„Yes, chess.“ He sat down opposite to Aiolia. "It is also called the game of kings. It is a game of strategy and war, great to gain a strategic way of thinking.“
Aiolia’s eyes lit up.
„Teach me, big brother!“
And so Aiolos taught Aiolia how to play chess. Explained the movements of the figures and told him all the rules going with chess. When he was finished, Aiolia stared down at the board with a frown of concentration. „The movements oft he figures are easy“, he commented. „But I bet it is not so easy to actually win.“
„Wanna find out? We can have practice game if you want.“
„Oh yes!“
And they played. The ovious happened and Aiolia lost every time. Aiolos played the game just too long for a newbie to beat him. However, the Sagittarian did notice with pride that Aiolia played a little better every time. The little boy had the makings of a great chess player.
„It sure is tough“, Aiolia admitted after their last game. „And I was right – knowing how to move the pieces doesn’t equal winning. But you are great, brother! You play it so well!“
Aiolos chuckled. „Don’t worry, Aiolia. The longer you play it the better you’ll get. I assure you of that. Besides, I have a great chess partner, Saga.“
„Is he good?“
„Quite.“
„But you do win!“
„Every single time.“
A grin krept on Aiolia’s face as he imagined a game of chess between his brother and Saga.
That night, the little Leo dreamed of a white and a black king, fighting on a field of black and white squares.
